AI hits e-commerce market as Amazon, eBay, Shopify jostle for bets

YCD News – The AI wave is sweeping the e-commerce space, with e-commerce giants such as Amazon, eBay, Shopify and others betting on generative artificial intelligence and launching related tools for buyers and sellers, according to a new report by BusinessInsider. Today, the platforms have launched a number of AI tools and have formed their own direction in developing AI tools.

At present, the AI tools provided by major e-commerce platforms for sellers are more focused on the writing and creation of Listings, and with these tools, sellers only need to provide simple product and image information to automatically generate a more complete Listing. At the same time, AI tools for generative customer review analysis, advertising campaigns, financial reporting, and sales and profitability are becoming increasingly common.

Amazon

Amazon has launched an AI tool that helps sellers write more detailed and better product descriptions. Sellers only need to enter some of the product’s information, such as the product name, whether the product has a variant, and the brand name, and the tool can generate a high-quality Listing, which sellers can also review and modify.

For third-party sellers facing fierce competition, the quality of a listing greatly affects its traffic and conversion rate. Creating a quality listing usually takes hours, which the AI tool can shorten to a few seconds.

According to an Amazon blog post, Amazon’s model learning is also able to infer product information from a variety of sources, for example, they can infer that a table is round if the specification lists a diameter, and these models can also infer the collar style of a shirt from an image.

Amazon’s ListingAI tool, therefore, not only helps sellers save time and effort, but also provides more complete product information and helps improve the shopping experience.

eBay

In 2021, Nitzan Mekel-Bobrov became eBay’s first Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, a position that evolved from eBay’s “Chief Scientist” position, which to some extent demonstrates eBay’s emphasis on artificial intelligence.

So far, eBay has launched a number of AI tools for buyers and sellers on the platform, including AI tools to help generate Listings, 3D imaging tools, natural language search to improve buyer search results, as well as AI shopping assistants for electronics and auto parts products.

Internally, eBay is also developing AI tools designed to improve the productivity and creativity of engineers, analysts, and content creators.

eBay’s Listing Generation AI tool is capable of automatically generating listings based on images. sellers simply take or upload a photo in the eBay app (currently only available in Apple iOS), and the tool writes titles, descriptions, and adds important information, such as the product release date, detailed categories and subcategories, and more. Additionally, the tool can be combined with other eBay technologies to give an item’s suggested selling price and shipping costs.

eBay’s Listing Generation AI tool has been upgraded from previous versions based on customer feedback, and the latest version is currently in beta testing and is expected to be fully available in the coming months.

Shopify

In addition to applications for Listing generation, Shopify has developed AI tools for analyzing data or helping with competitive research, and it released a suite of AI tools this summer called ShopifyMagic, which combines the use of anonymized Shopify data and OpenAI’s ChatGPT API to generate responses to a merchant’s business needs Response.

With ShopifyMagic, merchants can get relevant support for a range of tasks related to store building, marketing, customer support and back-office management.

ShopifyMagic has the ability to draft customized responses to the more common customer questions that businesses have, allowing merchants to review and edit the content. These answers are then automatically shared with the customer who asked the question, so merchants don’t have to respond in real time.

Additionally, merchants can create email campaigns using just a few keywords, and the AI tool automatically writes persuasive subject lines, engaging content and recommended send times for higher click-through rates.

Shopify also recently released Sidekick, an AI tool powered by ShopifyMagic, an AI assistant that performs merchant tasks and allows merchants to interact with the tool using their everyday language.

Shopify has also been working on a number of consumer-facing AI tools, such as Shop.AI, a shopping assistant designed to help consumers easily find specific products in the Shop app using natural conversational prompts.

YCD found that the application of generative AI in e-commerce is still in the early stages, and the AI tools provided by various platforms are still to be improved. For sellers, these tools can improve operational efficiency, but there is a certain risk of blindly relying on these tools.
